After women, the US Open has also got a new champion in men's. Spain's 19-year-old Carlos Alcarez defeated Norway's Casper Rood 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the final played in New York on Sunday. The match between the two players lasted for 3 hours and 20 minutes. With this win, Alcarez has also reached number 1 in the ATP rankings. This is Alcarez's first Grand Slam.
Talking about the last 17 years, Alcarez is the youngest player to win a Grand Slam during this period. He is also the youngest player to win the US Open title in the last 32 years. Before him, Pete Sampras of America won the US Open title in 1990 at the age of 19. Rafael Nadal won the French Open in 2005 at the age of 19. Alvarez had to face defeat in the quarterfinals of the US Open last year.
Alcarez has also reached number one in the ATP rankings. He has also become the youngest number one player in the ATP rankings beginning in 1973. Till now this record was held by Luton Hewitt of Australia. Hewitt became the youngest number one tennis player on November 19 in 2001 at the age of 20 years 8 months 23 days.
Carlos Alvarez reached the final of the US Open for the first time by defeating Francis Tiago of America in the semi-final match. He defeated Tiafoe 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in a five-set match. He entered the finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
At the same time, Kasper Rudd defeated Karen Khachanov of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the semi-finals to reach the final of a Grand Slam for the second time.
