Women's T20 World Cup 2024: ICC's historic decision, big gift to women cricketers
Women's T20 World Cup 2024: The decision to give equal prize money to women cricketers as men was taken in the ICC's annual conference in July 2023.
The International Cricket Council announced paying equal prize money to women and men cricketers in the World Cup. Against the backdrop of such a situation, the forthcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024 will be the first ICC tournament where women cricketers will receive the same prize money as men.
ICC further said that an assurance of USD 112,500 has been given to all the 10 participating teams in the tournament. A sum of USD 2.34 million has been fixed as prize money for the winning team of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates. One million US dollars was the prize money received by the Australian team that won the Women's T20 World Cup which was played in South Africa last year. Thus, this prize money has been enhanced by 134 percent.
Each team will receive a payment of USD 31,154 for every win in this group stage of the competition, while the six teams that do not reach the semi-finals will be paid USD 1.35 million depending on their position.
This, the ICC said, was taken at the ICC Annual Conference in July this year. The ICC Board decided on equal prize money seven years ahead of its pre-determined schedule of 2030. Thus, cricket is the first sport for which women and men cricketers will get equal prize money in the World Cup. It is worth mentioning here that the ICC Women's T20 World Cup will be played in the United Arab Emirates starting October 3.
