Windfall tax reduced on crude oil: Zero tax on petrol-diesel and ATF, see here how much decreased
The government has reduced the windfall tax on domestically produced crude oil. According to the notification issued by the government, the windfall tax on domestically produced crude oil by petroleum companies like ONGC and Reliance Industries has been reduced from Rs 6,400 per tonne to Rs 4,100 per tonne. This deduction has come into effect from May 2. The increase or decrease in windfall tax does not make any difference to the common man.
The government has retained the windfall tax on petrol-diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) at nil i.e. no windfall tax will be levied on these petroleum products. The windfall tax was introduced on July 1 last year. It was decided to impose an export duty (windfall tax) of Rs 6 per litre on petrol and ATF, while Rs 13 per litre on diesel. After this, the government abolished this tax on the export of petrol on 20 July. The central government reviews the windfall tax every 15 days.
Petrol and diesel prices have remained stable in the country for more than 11 months. The last time petrol-diesel prices were changed was in May 2022. Then excise duty was reduced by Rs 8 on petrol and Rs 6 per litre on diesel. Due to this, the prices of petrol and diesel were reduced by Rs 9.5 and Rs 7 respectively. In July 2022, the Maharashtra government cut VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 3 per litre.
