Rashid Latif, a former Pakistan batting wicketkeeper, advised struggling Mahendra Singh Dhoni during the IPL that he should retire a long time back. Dhoni, who is a 43-year-old player, has scored low scores of 30 not out, 16, 30 not out, and zero not out in four of his Chennai Super Kings matches during the 2025 season of the IPL. Chennai's team has settled in ninth position in the table in the standings, losing three of four matches.
Rashid Latif said, "Dhoni should have quit the game long ago. A wicketkeeper usually lives for 35 years, I am an example of this… If I perform well and when I don't do it at a high level my reputation will diminish. Even if you have done it for 15 years, the younger generation will not be impressed."
He said, "His playing did not benefit his team even in 2019 (ODI World Cup), he should have understood then. If you are choosing the team over a player then it is an injustice to the game, that is why he is being trolled. I watched 2-3 matches and the crowd makes a lot of noise, but CSK needs points right now, they are at the bottom of the table and if the reason is only one or two players then you need to understand the need of the hour."
About Pakistani players not playing in the IPL, Rashid Latif said, "Obviously, we also miss it (playing in the IPL), if we also played then it would have increased interest and business. If our players were playing, some broadcaster would definitely have shown it here.”
