The Tripura unit of Congress has demanded a judicial inquiry from a sitting judge of the High Court into the death of a student in Gandatvisa of Dhalai district and the incidents of violence that followed.
19-year-old college student Parameswar Riyang was hurt in a clash between two groups on 7 July. He succumbed to the injuries at the hospital on 12 July. His death triggered riots and arson at Gandatvisa, leaving at least 40 families homeless, officials said.
A five-member team of the TPCC visited the house of one Parameshwar Riang and other violence-affected families to take stock of the situation in Gandatwisa, senior party MLA Sudip Roy Barman told reporters here on Tuesday.
"Parameshwar was seriously injured in the presence of police. Looting, rioting, and arson also took place in the presence of police personnel. So we have demanded a judicial probe," he said.
Besides this, Roy Barman said the TPCC wants "permanent security camps" in sensitive areas of Gandatwisa, government jobs for the kin of the victims, and adequate compensation to the violence-affected families.
"Families whose houses were completely burnt have been given only Rs 25,000 and Parameshwar's mother has been given Rs 5 lakh. We want the state government to give adequate compensation to all the violence-affected families of Gandatwisa," he said.
