It is often told by our health experts that screen time for children should be limited, as it can hinder their development. There is also a possibility that excessive screen time can make them aggressive, lazy, and lethargic, but if seen, the screen tempts every child and also inspires them to do something good.

Therefore, in this era of technological development, it is very important for children to have knowledge of it, but sometimes due to excessive use of it, children get used to it, due to which their physical and mental health starts getting affected. So let us know about the negative effects of excessive screen time on children.

  • Reduction in physical activities and increase in obesity: Excessive screen time reduces the physical activities of kids. Instead of playing in the park, they prefer to spend their time on the sofa or bed, continually looking at the screen of their phone or laptop. The problem of obesity starts arising in them, which is very harmful to health.
  • Sleep-related issues: Continual gaze at the screen for a long time, especially with a smartphone before sleeping, starts to perturb the sleep pattern of children. This happens because of light from the screen termed blue light. This lessens the production of melatonin since the melatonin hormone regulates sleep.
  • Anxiety and depression: Since children stare at the screen most of the time, they are isolating themselves with regard to moral values, such as cooperation and empathy; instead, they prefer being alone. As a result, they can easily be caught by anxiety or depression.
  • Eyes start deteriorating: Many types of problems start happening in the eyes of children due to looking at the screen for a long time. These include problems like watery eyes and poor vision, among others. This is called digital eye strain.
  • Cognitive development decreases: Language development occurs very quickly in children aged 18 months to 3 years. Normally, at this age, children will learn to speak during their playtime with family members. Along with this, literacy etc also develops in children after 4 years. However, such cognitive development may be delayed in children who remain in screen.
