This appointment has been made in place of Ben Wallace. Another Sunak ally and Indian-origin minister Claire Coutinho has got the energy security and net zero portfolio.
Before the elections to be held in Britain next year, PM Rishi Sunak has reshuffled his cabinet. Grant Shapps has been made the new Defense Minister of the country. This appointment has been made in place of Ben Wallace.
Actually, Wallace submitted his resignation to PM Sunak on Wednesday. Grant Shapps has held a number of senior cabinet positions during his career. He has served in Transportation, Internal Affairs, Business and Energy, and Net Zero.
This will be Shapps' fifth cabinet post as defense minister. Shapps has been a long-time ally of PM Sunak. Shapps supported Sunak during his campaign to become Conservative Party leader and prime minister last year.
Claire Coutinho, another Sunak ally and Indian-origin minister, has the portfolios of energy, security, and net zero. Coutinho worked as an aide to Sunak at the Treasury Department when he was Chief Secretary.
During the tenure of former Defense Minister Wallace, Britain had given military aid worth 2.3 billion pounds to Ukraine in 2022. After which Britain became the first country to start supplying long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine.
