Singapore-born Indian-origin economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam won the presidential election on Friday. With Tharman Shanmugaratnam winning the Singapore presidential election, he has joined the list of leaders of Indian origin who dominate politics in important capitals of the world. His victory is considered a symbol of the growing influence of Indians across the world.

Shanmugaratnam (66), who was the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore from 2011 to 2019, got 70.4 percent votes while his rivals N. Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian received 15.7 percent and 13.8 percent of the votes respectively. Tharman Shanmugaratnam defeated two rivals of Chinese origin in the presidential election held for the first time since 2011. A spokesperson of the Election Commission gave this information.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated Shanmugaratnam on winning the presidential election. “Singaporeans have elected Tharman Shanmugaratnam as our next President by a decisive margin,” he said.
