Telecom Bill 2023: Government will take over all networks in case of emergency, control of companies will end

According to the Telecom Bill 2023, in case of emergency, the government can take over the telecommunication service and network of the country. Telecom Bill 2023 is going to come into force from 26 June 2024. The central government partially notified the Telecom Act on Friday to come into effect from June 26 and said that provisions including sections 1, 2, 10, and 30 will remain in force.

After the implementation of the Telecom Bill 2023, the provisions of sections 1, 2, 10 to 30, 42 to 44, 46, 47, 50 to 58, 61, and 62 of the Act will also come into force from June 26. According to the notification issued by the government, the government can take control of telecom services on the grounds of security, public order, or prevention of crimes.

According to the Act, in an emergency, any telecom company that want to create or operate a telecom network, provide services, or maintain appropriate equipment must be authorised by the government.

After the Act's guidelines take effect, the Universal Service Obligation Fund will be renamed the Digital India Fund, and it will be able to fund research and development and pilot projects rather than just supporting the establishment of telecom services in rural regions.
