Tamil Nadu MP to meet Gajendra Singh Shekhawat regarding Cauvery river dispute, meeting to be held in New Delhi

Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister S. An all-party delegation of MPs led by Duraimurugan will reach New Delhi. Here all will meet Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. This meeting will be held regarding the Kaveri river issue. However, the date of the meeting has not been decided yet. Sources in the Tamil Nadu Water Works Department told news agency IANS that this meeting will be held soon.

Karnataka has announced that it will not release any more Kaveri water to Tamil Nadu. Only after this announcement, did Tamil Nadu announce to call this meeting.

Through this meeting, the delegation will apprise the Union Minister about the need for Cauvery water. It will also inform him about the water being released to save Kuruvai crops in the delta districts of Tamil Nadu.

The Supreme Court will hear the dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu regarding Cauvery water on September 21.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said in a statement that Karnataka has baselessly alleged that Tamil Nadu's demand for more Cauvery water is unreasonable. The Chief Minister also said that Karnataka has also alleged that Tamil Nadu has increased its ayacut areas which is a baseless allegation.

Stalin said that as per the final judgment of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal and the Supreme Court judgment, the riparian states in the Cauvery basin should share the water available in the crisis year on a proportionate basis. He said that as per this judgment, Karnataka will have to share the water open on September 14. To date, 103.5 tmcft should have been released but the state released only 38.4 tmcft. This has resulted in a shortfall of 65.1 tmcft.

The Cauvery Water Management Authority has called an urgent meeting on Monday, September 18 as Karnataka had defied the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) order to release 5000 cusecs of water by September 13.

Meanwhile, PMK State President Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss addressed Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who has been called. Karnataka Chief Minister will meet Siddaramaiah and resolve the dispute between the two states over Cauvery water.
