Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotimath Badrinath and Sharda Peeth Dwarka, passed away on Sunday at the age of 98. He breathed his last at Paramhansi Ganga Ashram at Jhoteshwar in the Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh at 3.30 pm. He was considered the greatest religious leader of the Hindus.
Swami Shankaracharya was ailing for a long time. He was undergoing treatment in Bangalore. Recently he had returned to the ashram. Shankaracharya's disciple Brahm Vidyanand told- Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati will be given samadhi at Paramhansi Ganga Ashram at 5 pm on Monday. Swami Shankaracharya also went to jail in the freedom struggle. At the same time, he also fought a long legal battle for the construction of the Ram temple.
Shankaracharya Shri Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati was born in a Brahmin family in Dighori village of Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh. His parents named him Pothiram Upadhyay in his childhood. At the age of 9, he left home and started the journey of religion. During this, he reached Kashi and here he learned Brahmalin Shri Swami Karpatri Maharaj Veda-Vedang, the scriptures.
When the Quit India Movement was announced in 1942, Swami Swaroopanand also joined the movement. At the age of 19, he became famous as a revolutionary monk. He was imprisoned for 9 months in Varanasi and 6 months in Madhya Pradesh jails. The last birthday of Jagadguru Shankaracharya was celebrated on the day of Hariyali Teej.
Swami Swaroopanand was made a Dandi Sanyasi in 1950. The Brahmin Shankaracharya of Jyotimath Peeth took initiation of Dand Sanyas from Swami Brahmanand Saraswati and came to be known as Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. He received the title of Shankaracharya in 1981.
Shankaracharya Swami Sparupanand Saraswati had surrounded VHP and BJP in the name of Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas. He had said- BJP-VHP want to make their office in the name of the temple in Ayodhya, which is not acceptable to us. Shankaracharya is the supreme among Hindus. We are the Supreme Court of Hindus. The temple should have a religious form, but these people want to give it a political form which is not acceptable to us.
