Nepal's Supreme Court on Friday held Deputy Prime Minister Ravi Lamichhane guilty of dual citizenship. The court has ruled to cancel his membership and election as an MP. After this, he will have to leave the post of Deputy PM and Home Minister. In fact, there were allegations against Lamichhane that apart from Nepal, he also has US citizenship.
While dual citizenship is considered illegal in Nepal. 5 judges of the constitutional bench have given this decision. It was presided over by five judges of the Constitutional Bench of Nepal. It was presided over by Acting Chief Justice Harikrishna Kharki. After the court's decision, Lamichhane will also have to leave the post of Home Minister.
On December 14 last year advocates Yubaraj Podel and Rabiraj Basaula filed a petition in the court against Ravi Lamichhane. In this, Lamichhane was accused of obtaining a Nepali passport without giving up his US citizenship. Earlier, Ravi Lamichhane, a Nepalese citizen, had taken a US green card.
He had returned to Nepal as an American citizen and obtained a Nepali passport on the basis of his rejected Nepali citizenship. While there is a rule in Nepal that to get Nepalese citizenship again, an application has to be made to the district administration.
Ravi Lamichhane did not follow any law and formed a new party on fake Nepalese citizenship and contested elections. Became MP and then Home Minister along with Deputy Prime Minister.
It is said about Lamichhane that he became deputy PM as a TV anchor. Lamichhane started the Rashtriya Swatantra Party in the year 2022 elections. In the very first election, his party played the role of kingmaker. It emerged as the fourth-largest party in the elections.
