The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has appointed former captain Sanath Jayasuriya as interim head coach of the squad ahead of the limited-overs home series against India later this month. Jayasuriya succeeds Chris Silverwood, who resigned for personal reasons after the team's disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup.

Jayasuriya's first term as head coach will include three T20 Internationals and three ODIs against India starting July 27. He is currently working as Sri Lanka Cricket's full-time 'cricket consultant'. Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva said, "Until we find a permanent solution, Sanath will continue to guide the national team with his international cricket experience."

From 1991 to 2007, Jayasuriya played 110 Test matches, scoring 6973 runs at an average of 40.07 with the help of 14 centuries and 31 half-centuries. The left-hander scored 13,430 runs in 445 ODIs at an average of 32.36 with the help of 28 centuries and 68 half-centuries. He played an important role in Sri Lanka's victory in the 1996 ODI World Cup.
