There has been a scene of devastation after a sudden flash flood caused by a cloud burst in North Sikkim. So far 18 people have lost their lives in this sudden flood, while more than 120 people are still reported missing. According to an order, on Friday a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will conduct a search operation in the tunnels where people are trapped. The order issued said that an NDRF team will be sent to Chungthang, Sikkim for the rescue of people trapped in the tunnels without food, water, or any possible exit for the last 48 hours.

An international study had warned about the Sikkim disaster two years ago. The research team had expressed the possibility of Lhonak Lake in Sikkim bursting and the lower area of the lake being affected. This study was published in the journal ‘Geomorphology’ in the year 2021. This study said that the level of Lhonak Lake has increased significantly in the last several years due to the melting of the glacier and there is a possibility of flood (GLOF) due to the bursting of the glacier lake.

The administration has once again issued a warning regarding the sudden flood. This warning has been issued regarding the glacial lake Shaku Chu. According to the information, satellite data has revealed that the level of the lake has increased significantly. In such a situation, there is a danger of the lake bursting due to overflow.
