Second win for Indian girls in Junior Asia Cup Hockey: Beat Malaysia 2-1, top group

The Indian hockey team defeated Malaysia in the second league match of the Junior Asia Cup (Girls) on Monday. With this, India is on top of its group. Earlier, in the first match played on Saturday, Uzbekistan was defeated by a huge margin of 22-0.
In the ongoing tournament in Kakamigahara city of Japan, the Indian girls took a 2-1 lead in the first half, which they retained till the end of the match. Mumtaz and Deepika scored a goal each for India, while Dian Najeri scored a goal for Malaysia.
With this win, India has secured the top position in their pool.
In the sixth minute of the match, Dian Najeri scored a goal for Malaysia to give the team a 1-0 lead. After that, India's Mumtaz scored the first goal in the 10th minute to bring the team back. After this, in the 26th minute of the match, Deepika scored a goal to give the team a 2-1 lead. Both the teams had chances in the third and fourth quarters, but neither could convert them into goals.
10 teams are participating in this tournament which will run till June 11. Along with the Indian team, four other teams have got direct entry into the Under-21 hockey tournament on the basis of their world rankings, which include teams from China, Korea, Japan, and Malaysia. The remaining five teams, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, and Indonesia, have qualified for the tournament through the Women's Junior Cup held in Kazakhstan in October last year.
The Indian team is placed in Pool A along with Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, and Uzbekistan. Whereas, Pool B comprises Japan, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and defending champions China. The leading teams in their respective groups will advance to the semi-finals. While the third and fourth-placed teams will play for the fifth to eighth-ranked classification. The fifth-placed teams in both pools will play each other for the 9th and 10th places.
