On Tuesday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's petition challenging the decision of the Delhi High Court. The High Court refused to dismiss the defamation case brought against him for his ' scorpion on Shivling' remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Supreme Court's bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, heard the case until six p.m. Typically, the hearing lasts until four o'clock p.m. A lawyer requested that the bench hear the petition on Tuesday, or else the Congress leader would have to appear in a Delhi court on the same day in connection with a private defamation claim. The Chief Justice said, "Just send the email. I will look into it now."
The Delhi High Court had on August 29 refused to quash the defamation proceedings against Tharoor. It had said that prima facie allegations like 'scorpion on Shivling' against the Prime Minister are disgusting and reprehensible. It canceled the interim order and directed the concerned parties to appear in the lower court on Tuesday, September 10.
