The people of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine woke up to the sound of explosions on Monday morning. Russia attacked Kyiv with Iranian suicide drones. Russia's aim was to completely destroy Kyiv's power stations and infrastructure.
However, Ukraine's air defences repelled the Russian attack by downing 30 out of 35 drones. This was Russia's third air attack on Kyiv in the last seven days.
According to Ukrainian officials, through these attacks, Russia wants to push Ukraine into darkness and cold. The infrastructure has suffered a lot due to the attack. Our engineers are continuously working to fix the situation.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Maletsky said that no civilians were killed or injured in the attack. Oleksiy Kuleba, the governor of the region surrounding Kyiv, said several residential houses were damaged. Two people have been injured there.
Suicide drones are self-destructing unmanned aircraft. They are small in size and are also cheap. They go to their target at high speed and explode there. The engines of these drones make a humming sound. Ukrainians call them mopeds. Ukraine's army combats these drones through anti-aircraft missiles and fighter jets.
A power grid operator described the situation as difficult and said the central and eastern parts of the country were worst affected. Emergency power cuts have been imposed in many areas, including Kyiv city, Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava and Zaporizhzhya.
A man who witnessed the attack told the media outlet Reuters that he saw a fire burning at an energy centre. A hospital guard told me that first I heard a bang. In the next 3 to 4 minutes, I heard another bang.
Russia fired more than 70 missiles on Ukraine on Friday. This was one of Russia's biggest attacks. After this, there was a power failure in the second-largest city of Ukraine. An emergency blackout was declared across the country.
