On Thursday, protesting NSUI workers, demanding student-union elections in Rajasthan University, were lathi-charged by the police and 18 others detained. According to the police, two students received minor injuries. These injuries were sustained when the cops tried to stop them from marching towards the state assembly and clashed with them.

NSUI, the student wing of Congress condemned the police action on its workers and said that they were protesting democratically. It said that it will continue to agitate for student union elections as it is their right.

According to the police, the student activists started their protest outside Rajasthan University and started marching towards the state assembly to raise their demands, but were stopped due to the ongoing assembly session. Gandhinagar SHO Udaybhan said that the students wanted to march toward the assembly and were protesting outside the university demanding student union elections. When the police stopped them, they scuffled with the police. He said that two students suffered minor injuries in this clash.

NSUI national spokesperson Ramesh Bhati condemned the police action on the students in a statement and said that the organization will surround the assembly demanding student union elections. Bhati said in a statement that the scuffle with the peaceful protesting students showed the cowardice of the government. One of our officials has a broken hand and many colleagues have suffered serious injuries on the head and body.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has condemned the use of force by the police on the students. He wrote on 'X' that the use of force by the police on the students protesting in Jaipur demanding student union elections is highly condemnable. The state government should explain why it is shying away from holding student union elections. This is beyond comprehension. It is unfortunate that the legitimate demands of students are being suppressed by showing fear of the police-administration.

He wrote, 'Many student leaders of NSUI have been seriously injured in this use of force. I wish for their speedy recovery.'
