Rishi Sunak sacked the chairman of the Conservative Party: the tax report was not in order; the Ministerial code was violated
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sacked Nadim Zahawi, chairman of the Conservative Party, from the government on Sunday. Rishi Sunak ordered an independent investigation into Zahawi's tax affairs. The investigation found that Zahavi's tax reports were not correct. He had committed a serious violation of the ministerial code in tax matters.
The UK ministerial code describes how ministers should behave and carry out their duties.
In July last year, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Zahavi as finance minister. He was also involved in the cabinet during the tenure of Liz Truss. Sunak made him the chairman of the party when he became the PM.
Rishi Sunak sent a letter informing about the removal of Zahavi from the post. Sunak wrote – The independent consultant has shared the findings of the investigation with both of us. It is clear that there has been a serious breach of the Ministerial Code. That's why I am removing you from your post in the government.
Independent consultant Laurie Magnus found Zahavi was misleading about his taxes. In July last year, the report on Zahavi's tax affairs was clearly bad.
Zahavi said last week that he had reached a settlement with the tax authority. With this, he corrected his record.
The British tax authority ruled that Zahavi was negligent in his declarations. However, Zahavi said that he did not make any mistake intentionally paying less tax.
