Rebel policemen attacked the prime minister's house on Thursday in the Caribbean country of Haiti. At that time PM, Ariel Henry was not present at home. He was returning from Argentina. After this, the rebel policemen surrounded the airport where Ariel Henry was about to arrive. With great difficulty, the PM was taken to the safe house. Gunshots were also heard near his house.
The rebel policemen were protesting against the killing of their colleagues. On Wednesday, 7 policemen were killed by criminal gangs. After which hundreds of policemen took to the streets of the capital Port-au-Prince on Thursday. They blocked roads by burning tyres, vandalized several vehicles and also entered the PM's house.
According to the national organization of Police of Haiti, in 2023 so far 14 policemen have lost their lives at the hands of criminal gangs. On January 25, attackers entered a police station in a town in Haiti and killed two policemen. At the same time, four policemen were taken out of the station and killed.
Protesters hold the government responsible for these killings. According to him, PM Ariel Henry did not do enough to eliminate gangs.
According to Haiti's media, kidnapping cases have also increased in the year 2023. Due to criminal gangs, unrest has spread in many cities including the capital. 78 policemen have lost their lives since PM Henry came to power. The police have proved unsuccessful in stopping the criminal gangs.
In October 2022, Ariel Henry's government appealed to the International Community for help. He demanded sending a multi-national security force to maintain law and order in Haiti. After his request, America and Canada increased financial assistance but no country sent a security force.
