The medical team at Rainbow Children's Hospital showcased exceptional expertise, dedication, and collaboration to rescue this little one, marking a significant first in the country's medical history.
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Rainbow Children's Hospital in Hyderabad has set a remarkable precedent in India by successfully rescuing an 18-month-old baby from Goa. This young patient was battling severe pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) while receiving the most advanced ventilatory support available.
The medical team at Rainbow Children's Hospital showcased exceptional expertise, dedication, and collaboration to rescue this little one, marking a significant first in the country's medical history. The 18-month-old child had ARDS caused by influenza pneumonia and had been on respiratory support for a week, including high-frequency ventilation and 100% oxygen. Despite these efforts, his oxygen levels remained dangerously low, necessitating the use of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and a transfer to a specialized facility.
ECMO, a process where the blood is externally oxygenated and carbon dioxide removed, allowed the baby's lungs to rest and heal. Dr. Dinesh Kumar Chirla, Director of Intensive Care Services, emphasized the hospital's readiness and experience in pediatric ECMO, comparable to developed countries. The Rainbow Retrieval Team, led by Dr. Kapil B Sachane and Dr. Sai Ram, worked tirelessly for over 24 hours to ensure the child's safe transfer.
Dr. Farhan Sheikh, Head of the Pediatric Intensive Care Department, highlighted the baby's 29-day ECMO support journey, praising meticulous planning and teamwork. Dr. Anupama Yerra, Senior Consultant Pediatric Intensivist, stressed the importance of swift airlifts for timely interventions, made possible through strong partnerships with air ambulance providers.
Dr. Ramesh Kancharla, Chairman and Managing Director of Rainbow Children's Hospital, commended their network of Neonatal and Pediatric Transport services, emphasizing their commitment to saving lives even in remote areas. The baby boy, now off ECMO and on low-flow oxygen, is making remarkable progress and is set to return to Goa.
Rainbow Children's Hospital's dedication to saving children's lives through strategic partnerships with air ambulance providers continues to be a beacon of hope, resulting in numerous success stories.
