Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create 'deep fakes' and said the media should educate people about the menace. Addressing journalists at the BJP's Diwali meeting at the party headquarters, Modi also mentioned his resolve to make India a 'developed India' and said that these are not just words but ground reality.

Narendra Modi further said that many of his videos are going viral on social media platforms in which he is seen singing songs and playing Garba. He said that the media should educate people about deep fake videos.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that 'Vocal for Local' has received support from the people. Modi further said that India's achievements during the COVID-19 pandemic have instilled confidence among the people that the country is not going to stop now. He also said that Chhath Puja has become a 'national festival' and it is a matter of great joy.

A few weeks ago the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued an advisory to social media platforms including Facebook Instagram and YouTube to remove deepfake content within 24 hours. The government has clearly said that if this is not done, criminal and judicial action will be taken under Indian laws.

This technology is used to swap faces in videos and other digital content to create fake media. Moreover, deepfakes are not limited to videos only, this technology can also be used to create other fake content like images, audio, etc.
