Do not stall projects unnecessarily in the name of the environment: PM Modi said Urban Naxalites stopped the work of Sardar Sarovar Dam for years
At the National Conference of Environment Ministers of all the states of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said – Do not stall development projects unnecessarily in the name of the environment. He gave the example of Sardar Sarovar Dam and said – Urban Naxalites stopped the construction of the dam for many years.
Modi said- The work of Sardar Sarovar Dam started as soon as the country became independent. Its foundation stone was laid by the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. After this, the Urban Naxalites became active and stopped the work of this dam to be built on the Narmada river, claiming that it would harm the environment.
As a result, it took several decades for the dam to be built. It was inaugurated when I became the Prime Minister. A huge amount of money was wasted due to this delay. Now that the dam is complete, you can very well imagine how dubious those Urban Naxal claims were.
PM said- These urban Naxalites are still active. I urge you to ensure that projects are not stalled unnecessarily in the name of the environment. We must have a balanced approach to counter the conspiracy.
Modi said- nowadays we see that in the states where there was an abundance of water, the groundwater used to remain above, and there is a shortage of water today. This challenge is not only for the water-related department, but the environment department will also have to consider it as an equally big challenge.
I would urge all environment ministers to promote a circular economy as much as possible in the states. This will also give strength to our campaign for solid waste management and freedom from single-use plastic.
