Onion prices have skyrocketed in the Philippines. There the price of onion has become almost 3 times more than that of chicken. According to the Agriculture Department, the cost of 1 kg chicken is Rs 325, while 1 kg onion is available for Rs 900. The smuggling of onions has also started due to rising prices and high demand.
According to the news of CNN, two days ago, customs officials seized onions worth Rs 3 crore. It was being smuggled from China behind pastry boxes. Earlier in December, customs officials had seized onions worth Rs 2.5 crore. Which was being brought hidden in a clothing shipment.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he was looking for a way to sell the confiscated onions. So that the shortage of onion can be met.
President Marcos has approved the decision to import 21 thousand metric tonnes of onions this week. But this onion will be able to reach the Philippines by January 27. Onion harvest will start arriving in the Philippines in February. After this onion prices are expected to come down.
Onion is an important part of the diet of the people of the Philippines. Every month 20 thousand metric tonnes of onions are consumed here.
Due to several super storms last year, the onion crop worth billions of rupees was ruined. Inflation in the Philippines has reached a 14-year high due to rising onion prices.
According to Joy Salceda, a resident economist at the Philippines House of Representatives, onion prices in the Philippines are among the highest in the world.
Senator Sherwin Win of the Philippines has demanded the formation of a task force to stop onion smuggling. He said that due to smuggling, the government does not get revenue and the market is also bad.
