From the point of view of road safety, many arrangements are being made for the convenience of drivers in the new rules being brought under the reform of passenger buses. Under this, the facility of indirect vision along with a rearview mirror has also been made mandatory for buses. New safety standards for passenger buses will come into effect from May 2025.
Buses are to be rated on the basis of standards. This mandatory certification will be equally applicable to both vehicle manufacturers and bus body manufacturers. This has been announced recently by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. According to Road Transport Ministry officials, the facility of indirect vision will help drivers see things behind or around the bus that are not covered by the rearview mirror.
These are much like the devices available in cars today, which would be fitted in blind spots or at the back of buses. These will provide real-time video to the drivers on the screen in front of them. According to officials, this is a much-needed improvement as it has been seen in many cases that bus drivers are unable to see what is at a lower level immediately behind or beside their vehicle. That is why they need helpers while driving the bus. The new system will be camera-based, which will provide drivers with complete scenario information apart from the rearview mirror.
This feature will remain optional for now. This is a necessary step to make buses road safety friendly and efficient, which bus manufacturing companies will have to adopt. An indirect vision device is a type of camera system equipped with a digital monitor. This removes the problem of limited visibility at blind spots for bus drivers.
