India's young Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has created history by defeating world number 1 Magnus Carlsen in the Norway Chess tournament. With his first win in classical chess, Praggnanandhaa has achieved the leader's position in Norway chess. 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa has previously defeated Carlsen in rapid/exhibition chess. After three rounds, the Indian Grandmaster has reached the top of the leader's board with 5.5 points. Praggnanandhaa has become the fourth Indian chess player to defeat Magnus Carlsen in classical chess.

With just three points after Praggnanandhaa's victory, Carlsen is currently ranked fifth on the leaderboard. With 5 points, Fabiano Caruana is in second place; Hikaru Nakamura is in third place with 4 points; and Alireza Firouzja is in fourth place with 3.5 points. The slow play of classical chess is well-known. Players are afforded ample opportunity to manoeuvre in this.

Praggnanandhaa and Carlsen have drawn their last three meetings in this format. World No. 2 player Fabiano of America defeated current world champion Ding Liren of China in other matches of the third round of the Norway Chess Tournament. Liren is now the last player standing out of the six after this loss.
