The first of the five-match T20 series between New Zealand and Pakistan took place on Sunday 16 March at Christchurch's Hagley Oval. In this match, the Kiwi team won the toss and invited Pakistan to play first and the entire Pak team got bowled out for a mere 91 runs in 18.4 overs. After this, the New Zealand team won the match quite easily with 9.5 overs left at the loss of just one wicket and reached the score of only 92 runs. With this win, the host country New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the series. Now the second match of this series will be hosted on 18 March at the University Oval in Dunedin.

After losing the toss and batting first, Pakistan had a very bad start. They lost their top four batsmen for just 11 runs in 4.4 overs. Mohammad Haris 0, Hasan Nawaz 0, Irfan Khan 1, and Shadab Khan returned to the pavilion after scoring 3 runs. After this, wickets kept falling continuously and the whole team collapsed for just 91 runs in 18.4 overs. Khushdil played an innings of 32 runs. Apart from him, no other batsman could even reach 20. For New Zealand, Jacob Duffy took four wickets, Jamieson took three, and Ish Sodhi took two wickets.

Chasing Pakistan's target of 92 runs, New Zealand had a very good start. New Zealand's only wicket fell in the form of Tim Seifert at a score of 53. Tim scored 44 runs and was caught by Mohammad Harris off Abrar Ahmed's ball. After this, Tim Robinson scored 18 runs and Finn Allen scored 29 runs to give the Kiwi team a very easy win by 9 wickets.
