The battle against cyber fraud in Mumbai has intensified to a larger extent and helpline number 1930 has become the largest weapon for it. In the past three years, complaints made through this helpline have exceeded 1 lakh and money saved through fraud stands at over Rs 241 crore.

Mumbai Cyber Police activated this helpline on 17 May 2022. Work was started with only 6 lines at first, but at present, this figure is 22. Day and night, dozens of policemen are stationed here so that prompt action could be initiated on the complaint of any victim.

Datta Nalawade, DCP of Mumbai Cyber Wing, said that an average of 1500 complaints are being received on the helpline every day. By Saturday, the total number of complaints had reached 1,01,069. So far, more than Rs 241 crore has been returned to the victims.

Cyber thugs usually make the victims' money disappear through UPI, wallets, fake accounts or online shopping. But if the victim calls 1930 on time, the police can immediately contact the banks through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and freeze the accounts and stop the money.

According to an official, just like there is a 'golden hour' in medical science, similarly 'golden 15 minutes' are most important in cyber fraud. The sooner the police get the information, the sooner the money can be stopped.

The police have so far blocked 8,214 mobile numbers which were being used in cyber crime. Fraudsters are now targeting not only the general public but also educated people like bank officials, doctors, engineers, and government employees.

However, the relief is that the recovery rate of the cyber wing is also increasing rapidly. Rs 51 crore has been recovered so far since the beginning of 2025 alone.

Nivarti Bawaskar, sub-inspector of the cyber police station, says, "When you get someone's hard-earned money back, the satisfaction you get is greater than any reward."
