Mukesh Ambani's entry into another new business

Reliance Group Chairman Mukesh Ambani is now going to try his hand at a new business. According to reports, Mukesh Ambani is about to get into the work of genetic mapping. Genetic mapping can be useful in revealing users' predisposition to certain diseases and ailments such as cancer. Apart from this, it will also prove beneficial in many other diseases including neurodegenerative diseases and cardiac risk.
Ambani's Reliance Industries will launch a Rs 12,000 comprehensive genome sequencing test developed by Strand Life Sciences. At $145 (Rs 11,970.26), the genome test is about 86% cheaper than other offerings available locally, said Strand CEO Ramesh Hariharan, reports Bloomberg.
Ramesh Hariharan said that this would be the cheapest such genomic profile in the world. They believe that due to the low cost, people will be attracted to adopt it. He said that the latest scientific research will be included in the interpretation of the results of the strand test. The testing would also allow for the creation of a repository of biological data, which could aid in the development of drugs.
Companies like US-based 23andMe make Ancestry Reports for $99 (Rs 8,172.80), but Health Plus Ancestry Reports costs $119 (Rs 9,823.87). Full genome sequencing costs more than $1,000 (Rs 82,549.70) for health red flags from Indian companies like MapmyGenome and Medgenome. There are Chinese firms that offer reports at cheap prices but do not cover the full range of tests.
Reliance plans to market the test extensively on the MyJio app in the coming weeks. Consumer interest in the US centers around tracing one's ancestry or characteristics such as athleticism, hair texture, and obesity propensity. Its long-term business model revolves around preventive healthcare. India has not yet set regulatory standards for genetic tests.
