The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a response from the Enforcement Directorate on the bail plea of MLA Abbas Ansari, who is in jail in a money laundering case. Abbas Ansari is the son of gangster-politician and former MLA Mukhtar Ansari, who died in jail a few months ago.

A bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and Sandeep Mehta issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and sought a response to the appeal filed by Ansari. In this case, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had rejected Ansari's bail plea on May 1. After this, he challenged the decision of the High Court in the apex court.

The high court had on May 9 rejected Ansari's bail plea, taking into account the source of funds produced by the ED in the case against him.

The ED had registered a case against Ansari, a Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, based on three earlier cases. Ansari was booked in the case on November 4, 2022. The Mau MLA is currently lodged in Kasganj jail.
