Mizoram's TV anchor becomes MLA, three women reach assembly for the first time

Lalrinpui and Pravo defeated Congress male candidates while Baril Vanneihsangi defeated her MNF rival. The Christian-dominated Mizo society has a patriarchal culture. Mizoram's main political parties have rarely nominated women candidates in the Lok Sabha and assembly elections. No woman candidate won the elections in 2013 and 2018.
A total of 174 candidates contested the elections held on November 7 in Mizoram. There were 16 women in this. There were 209 candidates in 2018. There were 18 women in it. There were 136 candidates in 2013. Only six women had contested the elections.
