Menstrual cards being given to schoolgirls in Assam: will help track period cycles and detect pregnancy
Menstrual cards are being distributed to school-going girls in Assam. With their help, girls will be able to track their period cycle. Along with this, any kind of irregularity or pregnancy in periods can also be detected.
In February, the Assam Police carried out a major operation to stop child marriage. The boys who married minor girls were arrested by raiding many places in the state and action was also taken against their families. In this episode, these cards are being distributed to the girls.
The health department has so far distributed 1 crore girls studying in government schools in 31 districts. These cards are being distributed to girl students of classes 8th and 9th. They will have to keep this card safe for many years to come. There is currently no plan to distribute these cards to girl students from classes before the 8th and classes from the 9th onwards.
According to the report of the National Family Health Survey, maternal and infant mortality rate is very high in Assam due to child marriage. Therefore, keeping in mind the health of the girl child, it has been decided to distribute menstrual cards. By recording the period cycle in these cards, women will be able to go to the nearest hospital for treatment immediately in case of any health problem.
Health Department officials say that Asha workers demand that these cards should also be given to those girls who are about to get married. For married women, they can help in detecting pregnancy.
