The Manipur government has issued an order to ban them. The order states that such spread will be dealt with seriously and a case will be registered as per law.

Recently, several videos and photos of widespread violence went viral on social media following which an order was issued by the government on Wednesday night.

A video shows two youths being shot at close range by some people and then buried in a pit. However, the location of the incident site and place of burial are not known.

The order issued by the Manipur Home Department said that the state government takes the alleged dissemination of videos and images through various social mediums showing violent activities, (any) harm to the body, or damage to private and public properties very seriously and with the utmost sensitivity. It said that the state government, after a thorough investigation of the matter, has decided to ban the spread of such videos and photos as a positive step towards bringing normalcy to the state.

The order said anyone who has such videos or images can contact the nearest superintendent of police, regardless of jurisdiction, and submit them for appropriate action.

Any person violating the order will be booked and prosecuted under the law and provision on misuse of technology. Action will be taken against them under the IPC and IT Act.

In September, massive protests broke out in Imphal Valley after photographs of the bodies of two missing youths surfaced on social media, and more than 100 students, mostly girls, were injured in a crackdown by security forces and police on protesters.

The protests prompted the Center to send a team of CBI officers and four of the accused were later arrested by the CBI team. He was taken to Guwahati for further investigation and legal procedures.

The northeastern state witnessed ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki tribes since May 3 this year. The violence erupted after the Meitei people demanded to be given tribe status.
