The one-day monsoon session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly was called on Tuesday (August 29) amid violence in the state since May. The assembly was adjourned sine die within an hour of its commencement. In fact, Congress legislators created a ruckus demanding an extension of the monsoon session by five days.
Opposition legislators, led by former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, said one day is not enough to discuss the current situation in Manipur, which is wracked by ethnic strife. All the 10 MLAs belonging to the Kuki community remained absent from the assembly. The proceedings of the House began at 11 a.m. with a two-minute silence for those killed in caste violence. In his address, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, "With great sadness, we condole the death of those killed in the violence. Words seem inadequate at such times for those who have lost their near and dear ones in the conflict." "
The house resolved that all differences should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means for communal harmony in the state. At the same time, the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon was also appreciated in the assembly. In the House, N Raghu Singh, a scientist coming from Manipur and involved in the mission, was congratulated.
Soon after, the Congress MLAs stood up from their seats and started chanting "stop joking, let's save democracy". The Congress demanded that a five-day session be held to discuss the situation in the state. Assembly Speaker Satyabrata Singh urged the opposition MLAs to sit down but they continued the ruckus. After this, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House for 30 minutes.
However, as soon as the House resumed after 30 minutes, the Congress MLAs continued their protest. It was only after this that the Speaker said that it was impossible to continue the session amid the uproar and adjourned the proceedings of the House indefinitely.
The Manipur government had last month recommended convening the session by August 21, but it was revised to August 28 after Raj Bhavan did not give the go-ahead. However, the Chief Minister's Office later announced that the assembly would be convened again on August 29.
