Malaysia Airlines has made a big announcement to start direct flights between Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur. This announcement has been made after 18 years by Malaysia Airlines. The airline will operate five flights a week on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with Boeing 737-800 aircraft on this route from December 2, the airline said. In a statement, the group said, "This will provide direct connectivity to 10 destinations in India - New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Amritsar, Trivandrum, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata.".

Malaysia Airlines said in a release: "As the operations begin, the airline is offering special introductory fares starting from Rs 21,799/- through economy class available from the 8th of October to November 8 for travel from December 3, under its 'Time for Malaysia' campaign". The airline has said that flight MH 184 from Kuala Lumpur to Kolkata will depart at 9.35 pm (local time) on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, while the return flight MH 185 from Kolkata to Kuala Lumpur will leave at 12.10 am (local time) on the same day.

The action taken by Malaysia Airlines is a reflection of its commitment to strengthen its position in one of its primary overseas markets, as Amritsar began conducting regular operations last month. Simultaneously, Sanjay Budhia, the Consul General of Malaysia in Kolkata, stated that travel and commerce between the two nations will increase with visa-free entry and direct flights from Kolkata. Direct flights between Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur were terminated by the airline in 2006.

Resuming direct flights to Kolkata will be an important part of our efforts to offer improved connectivity for our customers traveling between Malaysia and India," said Ahmad Lukman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer, MAG. "India is a very important market for us. We welcome passengers on board to enjoy a cross-cultural journey with seamless connectivity to popular global destinations via Kuala Lumpur, strengthening our position as Your Gateway to Asia and Beyond.
