Major cyber attack on TeamViewer, Russian hacker broke into corporate network

News broke about a significant cyber attack on TeamViewer, a software used for remote access. According to the report, Russian hackers hacked into TeamViewer's corporate network. The company itself has confirmed this in a statement. The company has claimed that this hacking was done by state-sponsored hackers who work for the Russian intelligence department, popularly known as APT29 or Midnight Blizzard.

According to the German company, its investigations have revealed that on June 26, the corporate IT network was attacked through an employee's account; however, this attack was stopped on its corporate network itself. As per the company, hackers could not access its internal network and user database since it keeps all databases separate.

So, according to TeamViewer, no user data has been directly linked with hackers, and none of the vital information of the company has been accessed. TeamViewer is the most popular tool for remote access tools.

Using TeamViewer, any two devices can be connected from any corner of the world. The firm claims to have over 6,00,000 paying customers and to provide remote access to more than 2.5 billion devices worldwide.

This is not the first time the name APT29 has been mentioned. The US government previously confirmed several times that the Russian government sanctions the APT29 hacking group which is one of the well-resourced government-backed hacking groups. The group has also been associated with long-running secretive espionage operations.
