After the demolition of madrasas in Assam's Goalpara district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said all these madrasas were not centers of education but centers of al-Qaeda. Sarma said- "We demolished 2-3 madrassas and now the people themselves are coming forward to demolish other madrasas. The Muslim community is coming forward to demolish madrassas saying that they do not want the places where al-Qaeda's work takes place. Children should be sent. This changes the character of the madrasa."
People of Pakhuria Char in Goalpara district of Assam demolished a madrasa, calling it a center of anti-national activities. The Assam government was not involved in its demolition. Rather they were surprised that the jihadi who was arrested was teaching in a madrasa. People have said that they do not support jihadi activities. However, the clerics of the madrassa that were demolished on Tuesday are absconding.
Recently, four madrassas were demolished in Assam. Of which the first three were dropped by government officials. Earlier on August 4, government officials demolished Madrasa Jamiul Hooda at Moirabari in Morigaon district. This was followed by the demolition of Jamiul Huda Academy Madrasa at Howli in Barpeta district on August 29 and Markjul Ma-Arif Quariana Madrasa in Bongaigaon district on August 31.
On Saturday, two suspected terrorists belonging to the Al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) terror groups were arrested by the Assam Police in the Goalpara district. The arrested people were identified as Abdus Subhan, Imam of Tinkunia Shantipur Masjid under Mornoi police station and Jalaluddin Sheikh, Imam of Tilpara Natun Masjid under Matia police station of Goalpara.
