Madras HC cancels minister Ponmudi's acquittal order in property case, sentence to be pronounced on December 21
Tamil Nadu: Madras High Court set aside Villupuram Principal District Judge's order acquitting Higher Education Minister and DMK leader K Ponmudi and his wife P Vishalakshi in the case. There are apprehensions that Higher Education Minister and DMK leader K Ponmudi may face disqualification which will become clear after the court announces the punishment.
Higher Education Minister and DMK leader K Ponmudi and his wife P Vishalakshi have suffered a major setback from the Madras High Court. The court on Tuesday cancelled the lower court order acquitting him in the disproportionate assets case of Rs 1.75 crore.
Passing the order on the appeal filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Justice G Jayachandran has convicted the minister and his wife. Also, after his hearing, he was directed to appear in court on December 21 for sentencing.
The judge set aside the Villupuram Principal District Judge's order acquitting Ponmudi and his wife in the case. The prosecution's case was that Ponmudi had acquired assets worth Rs 1.75 crore in his name and his wife's name while he was a minister in the DMK regime between 2006 and 2011, which was disproportionate to his known sources of income.
It is feared that Higher Education Minister and DMK leader K Ponmudi may face disqualification, which will become clear after the court announces the punishment.
