Karwa Chauth is one of those important festivals that cater to the cause of the long life of the husbands and, particularly, it is observed by the married women. In the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on the fourth day of the month of Kartik. On that day, women adorn themselves with "Solah Shringar" (sixteen adornments). They keep fast the whole day and only break it after they offer their prayers to the moon.

What this ritual practically explains is that women look at the moon and their husbands through a sieve. This is because, according to popular belief, the sieve possesses thousands of small holes, thereby allowing the women to see many reflections in the moon when viewed through it. They then look at their husband through the sieve, which symbolizes the husband's life, as long as the reflection of the moon is seen in the sieve. Therefore, during the ritual, the sieve reinforces the image of looking at the husband.
