Jio Cinema will stream original content after IPL: subscriptions will have to be taken like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video
Reliance Industries' OTT platform Jio Cinema will stream original content post-IPL, for which users will have to subscribe. Soon Jio Cinema will release movies and original web series in multiple languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Bhojpuri.
Jio Cinema is the official digital live-streaming partner of IPL 2023. Reliance's media unit Viacom18 has bought rights for digital live-streaming for Rs 23,758 crore. However, the OTT platform is live-streaming the IPL without charging any fees from the users.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Jyoti Deshpande, President of Reliance's media and content business, said that there are plans to release more than 100 movies and web series on Jio Cinema. New content will be released on the platform ahead of IPL 2023, which ends on May 28.
For original content, Jio Cinema will start charging for its content. Although Jyoti Deshpande said that the company has not yet finalized the Jio Cinema plan, the price will be decided soon.
Jyoti Deshpande said that the current OTT platform is dominated by foreign content. Jio Studio Talent wants to be Indian content.
Jio Cinema has claimed that the platform has received 5.5 billion unique video views in the first week of IPL. And on April 12, 2023, a record 22 million people watched the Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals match in Jio Cinema. For the first time, the BCCI has given IPL streaming rights separately for digital and TV for the 2023-27 cycle. Till last year, TV and digital streaming rights were given in a single package. The rights of IPL live-streaming on TV are with Disney Star, which it has bought for Rs 23,575 crore. Whereas, the media unit of digital live-streaming Reliance has been bought by Viacom18.
