In the FIFA World Cup on Thursday, Japan defeated Spain 2-1 in a big upset in the match played in Group E. With this, Japan confirmed their place in the knockouts of the tournament after 20 years. They will face Croatia in the pre-quarterfinals.

Spain reached the Not Out Round of the World Cup despite suffering an upset from Japan. On the other hand, Germany had to be eliminated from the tournament in the group stage even after defeating Costa Rica 4–2. Germany needed to beat Costa Rica by a higher goal difference to qualify for the knockouts. The team won, but the team fell behind Spain on a goal difference and finished third.
Germany and Spain had four points each. But Spain scored nine goals, while there were 3 against them. Germany scored 6 goals and 5 against them. In such a situation, Spain's goal difference was better. Gabry (10th minute), Kai Havertz (73rd and 85th), and Fulkrug (89th) scored for Germany. At the same time, Tejeda (58th) and Juan (70th) scored for Costa Rica.
