iPhone maker company 'Foxconn' wants to set up an Electric Vehicle (EV) plant in India. The Taiwanese company is in talks with the state governments of Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh regarding this. Economic Times has published a report regarding this.
Foxconn said that the electric two-wheeler manufacturing plant set up in India will meet the electric two-wheeler demand of Southeast Asia. This is the first time that a Taiwanese company has clearly stated its EV plant project for India.
According to reports, an Indian delegation is going to visit Taiwan soon to meet Foxconn officials and discuss their plans. However, it is not yet clear whether Foxconn wants to partner with several brands to set up a plant to make electric vehicles in India or set up a plant alone.
The Economic Times reported that Foxconn is looking to build a vertical platform with hardware-component manufacturing and battery management. After this, it will partner with local firms.
Last year, Foxconn chairman Young Liu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first visit to India. After that, the Prime Minister tweeted saying, 'It was a pleasure to meet Young Liu, chairman of Foxconn. I welcome his plans to expand semiconductors and electronics manufacturing capacity in India. Our thrust for EV manufacturing is in line with our commitment to 'Net Zero Emission'.
During a visit to India last year, senior Foxconn executives met officials from Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh regarding EV manufacturing. Media reports suggest that Foxconn is keen on Maharashtra, but may also look at Tamil Nadu as it is already an auto manufacturing hub there. And in Maharashtra, they are facing some challenges.
Foxconn manufactures iPhones in many countries of the world including India. Foxconn has the maximum number of iPhone manufacturing units in China. In India, Foxconn along with Wistron and Pegatron are also part of the government's Production-Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) to make iPhones.
