India's exports decreased in sectors like pharma, leather and footwear, growth in these sectors

Compared to the year 2015, India's exports have decreased in 2022 in sectors like pharmaceuticals, gems, jewelry, leather, and footwear. This means that global trade in these areas has decreased. However, exports of products such as electronics, machinery, petroleum, auto parts, iron and steel, and aluminum have increased during the same period.
Ajay Srivastava, the co-founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), said India's share of the global market in sectors such as apparel, leather, footwear, and seafood is declining. The special thing is that the main reason for the decrease in the share is not the price of these products but the quality.
According to the report, the major sectors in which the share of global trade has increased are electronics, telecommunications, mobile phones, electrical equipment, and machinery. These products are of substantial importance in world trade and have a total market value of over $6 trillion.
GTRI said that India's share in these sectors is small, but increasing gradually. India's share in global trade in 2022 was 1.8 percent. However, its share in machinery and electronics was 0.75 percent and 0.4 percent respectively in 2015. There has been significant improvement in these areas during the seven years.
The report also states that the quality issue is not limited to pharmaceuticals alone but exports of aquaculture products such as shrimp and prawns are getting affected due to quality issues. Many countries reject these products due to the presence of salmonella (a type of bacteria) in prawns. The quality issue has also affected the export of Indian tea. The countries to which tea is exported say that the pesticides in it exceed the permissible limit.
