As per the report shared by IIT Madras, the ratio of unicorn engineer founders is more as compared to others. Two years back, 85% of the founders were engineers, each valued at $1 billion. The shift in the count of unicorn startups in India varies from 100 in 2022 to 114 in 2024.
Non-engineers occupy 9% of this group, and women constitute only 7.2%. "Today, there is more diversity among startup founders as compared to a decade ago, says Rajesh Sawhney, founder of GSF Accelerator. Among these engineers, 60% are from IITs, 7% from Delhi Technology University, and another 6% from the Birla Institute of Technology.
Entrepreneurship once reminded us of risk-taking, but today it reminds us of unicorns and the thriving startup ecosystem where each city is coming up with a unicorn startup. Startups are now focusing on real-life problems in each sector, making India the most developed country.
