The tariff dispute between the US and China could open up new opportunities for India in several sectors including face masks, PPE, aluminum, and steel. Ajay Sahay, Director General of Federation of Indian Export Organization (FIEO), said, this step of America will start a tariff war between the two countries. In such a situation, there is a possibility of retaliatory action from China. This may provide an opportunity for India and other competitors to take advantage of the supply gap. India can take advantage of this to increase its presence in the American and European markets. In fact, America has increased the duty on some products of its largest trading partner China by up to 100 percent.

Ajay Srivastava, founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative, said the US and the European Union are cutting imports of electric vehicles from China. The US increasing tariffs on EVs, batteries and many other new technology items may force China to dump these products in other markets, including India. Higher duties on Chinese face masks, syringes, needles, and medical gloves present a significant opportunity for India.

China exports $420 billion to America. The tariff dispute has reduced China's exports by $18 billion.

India can increase trade in the US market by increasing production and export of in-demand products. India may not get any export benefits on products like EVs and semiconductors, as India is an importer of these. But, in the long run, with India starting large-scale semiconductor production in 2025, it will be able to export some of it to the US and other countries in Europe. Work on four chip plants is underway in India. The EV system is also gaining momentum.
