The three-match ODI series with England started at India's Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Harshit Rana and Yashasvi Jaiswal both made their debut in this one in an ODI. On a batting wicket, England won the toss and elected to bat first in India. Harshit Rana, representing India, bowled in a costly manner in the sixth over and earned an unwanted record in his name for a debut bowler.

England opener Phil Salt dominated over Indian pacer Harshit Rana in the sixth over. On the first ball of this over, Salt smashed a six, a four off the second ball, a six off the third ball, a four off the fourth ball, no run off the fifth ball, and a six off the sixth ball. In this way, he conceded a total of 26 runs in his over. The 26 runs conceded by 23-year-old Harshit Rana was the most expensive over-bowled by any debut bowler of India.

Phil Salt missed out on a half-century for England. He was run out in the 8.5th over. He faced 26 balls during his brief but attractive innings and scored 43 runs, which included 5 fours and 3 sixes. It was due to Phil Salt's explosive batting that England had scored 75 runs without losing a wicket in 8.4 overs.
