Immigrants will be able to stay 180 days after losing a job in America: 60 days time has been extended to find another job
More than 70,000 H-1B visa holders, who were victims of layoffs in the US during the last three months, have got a big relief. It has been recommended to increase the grace period of 60 days to 180 days for such people to find another job. This recommendation has been made on the initiative of White House Advisory Committee on Immigration (AANHPI) Chief Commissioner Sonal Shah and co-chairman of the sub-committee Ajay Bhutoria, which is set to be approved.
Both these Indians of the committee prepared the draft for the professionals who were retrenched, as well as persuaded other members of the committee to increase the grace period. By increasing the grace period, about 1.25 lakh people working on H1B visas in America will get relief. The recommendations made by the committee will now go to the Permit Commission and the US President will give formal approval.
Committee's Chief Commissioner Sonal Shah told Dainik Bhaskar that during the last few times, more than one hundred meetings were held with various agencies to extend the grace period of H1B visa. The recommendations to extend the grace period are historic.
Ajay Bhutoria, co-chairman of the sub-committee, says that after extending the visa grace period, the next agenda is to make green cards easier for NRIs (non-resident Indians). The green card backlog that has been going on for decades will be removed. The process will start in June.
The US H1B visa is a work visa granted to immigrants. American IT, finance and engineering companies can hire foreign professionals on H1B visas. Similarly, an L1 visa is available in case of transfer between companies. The H1 visa category has also been opened for the recently retrenched Indians so that they can now work in the Army and Intelligence as well.
