The Calcutta High Court did not issue any interim order to stall the release of a Hindi film. The court said no healthy criticism should be stopped in a democratic country. A petition had been filed to stall the release of The Diary of West Bengal. It was submitted in this petition that an attempt has been made to tarnish the image of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee through the film. The film is slated for an August 30th release in theatres.

The bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, while giving the verdict, said that he was not inclined to consider the petition, but a senior advocate had filed the petition, so the matter is pending. The matter should be listed for hearing after three weeks. TS Sivagnanam said, "We are in a democratic system and any healthy criticism should not be stifled here through a biopic. Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya described West Bengal as a tolerant society.

Petitioner Jai Saha said that the film directed by Sanoj Mishra has been made to fan hostility between two communities. The court said that the petitioner can seek cancellation of the film in the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The lawyer of the CBFC said that they had given a certificate for the release of the film.
