Delhi High Court has refused to perform Chhath Puja on the banks of Yamuna. The High Court dismissed a petition filed for Chhath Puja on the banks of the Yamuna River. As per the High Court, there is a risk of disease in the river which is why permission cannot be given. This ban has probably been imposed due to high levels of pollution in the Yamuna river and people can fall ill by bathing in such poisonous water.

The lawyer appearing for the Delhi government informed the court that at present times, the Yamuna river is immensely polluted. If the devotees are allowed to perform Chhath Puja on the bank of the river, then they are likely to fall ill. The lawyer informed the court that the Delhi government has identified 1 thousand places in the capital for Chhath Puja. Necessary arrangements have also been made with respect to this.

The court said that according to the report of September 2024, pollution in Yamuna is at its highest level ever. The biggest reason for this is the untreated sewage being dumped into the river from unauthorized colonies. Therefore the court rejects the petition. The court said that the mindset should be clean. People in the city are not unanimous to clean the Yamuna. Politicians are giving assurances to the people who encroach on the drains of the Yamuna river.

The government has got more than 1 thousand ghats built in Delhi, which are provided with tents, lights, cleanliness, security, etc. Besides this, at many ghats, arranging cultural events is also done by the Maithili-Bhojpuri Academy to celebrate Chhath happily.
