Gyanvapi Case: Supreme Court will hear the petition of Muslim side on April 1, Allahabad HC's decision challenged

The Gyanvapi case will be heard in the Supreme Court on April 1. The Gyanvapi Masjid Management Committee has filed a petition against the Allahabad High Court order upholding a lower court order allowing Hindu prayers in the southern basement of the mosque.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra will sit on the bench to hear the petition filed by the Anjuman Intejamia Masjid Committee, which is contesting the High Court's decision from February 26.

The Allahabad High Court has directed that the Hindu side's worship continue in the Vyas basement, despite dismissing the Muslim side's petition. The Muslim side had approached Allahabad High Court in opposition to the Varanasi District Court's decision in favour of the Hindus in this case.

The Muslim perspective argues that the Allahabad High Court's intervention with the Places of Worship Act of 1991 is improper.

In the year 1991, the petitioner local priests filed a petition in the Varanasi Court. In this petition, the petitioners had sought permission to worship in the southern basement of the Gyanvapi Mosque. In this petition, it was said that in the 16th century, on the orders of Aurangzeb, a part of the Kashi Vishwanath temple was demolished and a mosque was built there.
